St. John West Shore's New UroDynamic Center Offers Dedicated Program for Treatment of Urinary Incontinence

CENTER PROVIDES HIGHLY-ADVANCED, PERSONALIZED HEALTHCARE TO HELPS PATIENTS REGAIN CONTROL OVER A PROBLEM THAT AFFECTS MILLIONS

January 2008 - St. John West Shore Hospital announces the opening of its new UroDynamic Center, which offers women and men an array of leading-edge medical treatment options for urinary incontinence and pelvic dysfunction.

The UroDynamic Center provides patients with the added convenience of receiving all of their treatment at one central location. Patients receive the highest standards of urinary incontinence care through state-of-the art diagnostic testing, personalized treatment plans, physical therapy and rehabilitation, advanced medical equipment and the latest non-invasive surgical options.

Staffed by a team of knowledgeable specialists with extensive experience in the field of urology and gynecology, the Center was founded to address a growing need within the community for a dedicated facility that deals only with urinary incontinence issues.

“Urinary incontinence is a medical condition that is extremely prevalent but unfortunately rarely talked about,” said Christopher Reese, MD, Director of St. John West Shore Hospital's UroDynamic Center. “One in every four women and one in every nine men suffers from it. Despite these large numbers the condition can still carry a stigma, leaving those affected embarrassed, ashamed and frustrated.”

To help break the stigma often associated with urinary incontinence, the UroDynamic Center was created to not only treat patients, but also to help educate them and let them know they aren't alone. At the center, patients are provided with a compassionate, sensitive environment where they can seek a thorough evaluation and the most technologically-advanced methods of treatment available for a full recovery.

Patients who visit the UroDynamic Center also benefit from a continuum of care provided by a core team of physicians and physical therapists who are assigned to them during the diagnostic phase of treatment. This group of medical professionals then works closely with each patient through the development and execution of a comprehensive, customized treatment plan.

“Once diagnosed many people who have urinary incontinence are hesitant to seek further treatment because they believe the only option available to them is surgery,” said Dr. Reese. “This is a misconception; today's modern treatments for urinary incontinence include many choices, including breakthrough physical therapy and rehabilitation, medications and highly-advanced, non-invasive medical procedures that are all available at St. John West Shore Hospital's UroDynamic Center.”

In order to help educate patients about urinary incontinence, a series of free seminars are being held at St. John West Shore Hospital, Community Outreach Building, Suite R, 29000 Center Ridge Road in Westlake.

Each seminar, which will be lead by the UroDynamic Center's Service Line Educator, will address the causes and the latest medical advancements, including state-of-the art diagnostic testing, rehabilitation programs and the newest non-invasive surgical options.
